Jack Wilshere believes England did all they could to have a strong World Cup campaign…

Outspoken Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has hit-back at England’s critics by claiming that the team underwent the ‘perfect preparation’ ahead of their failed World Cup campaign.

Wilshere also expressed his belief that England were ‘excellent going forward’, despite the Three Lions scoring just two goals in three games, and blamed the team’s first round exit on ‘a few individual mistakes’.

The player, who was quoted by the Daily Mail, added that the team did not get enough credit for their performances in Brazil, and that England can enter a ‘new era’ after Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard’s retirements.

“We were one of the best prepared teams at the World Cup,” the 22-year-old said. “Our preparation was perfect. Everyone did everything that was required. I don’t think we got enough credit for the World Cup.

“Ok, we didn’t get where we wanted to in the competition, and that was massively disappointing, but if you analyse the games a bit deeper, we did a lot of positive things that people were telling us to do.

“We went forward, and it was only a few individual mistakes that let us down, and at that level you get punished. In the Premier League sometimes you can get away with it, but at that level, with players like Luis Suarez and Mario Balotelli, they’ll punish you.”

Wilshere will be part of the England team that takes on Switzerland on Monday, in England’s first Euro 2016 qualifier.
