Gunners star promises to watch the legendary Italian closely…

Arsenal and England ace Jack Wilshere has promised to learn from Europe’s greatest holding midfielders…

The 22-year-old says he will study the characteristics and attributes of Italian idol Andrea Pirlo, and Barcelona anchorman Javier Mascherano, the Daily Mail reports.

The statements come after Wilshere was asked to play the deep-lying central role at the base of midfield for England against Switzerland on Monday evening.

Despite the fact the Three Lions picked up a moral boosting 2-0 victory, Wilshere occasionally looked uncomfortable in the position, as it restricted his chance to dribble and use his superb creativity.

He’s vowed though to improve, with England next hosting San Marino at Wembley at the beginning of October.

“I spoke with the manager and Gary Neville in the week and they told me they wanted me to play that role and I quite enjoyed it,” Wilshere told the FA’s website.

“It was my first time ever playing there, so over the next month or so I am going to look at a few videos of the game and of players who play in that position regularly – Pirlo, Mascherano and players like that and I’ll get better.

“I felt it went well tonight but next time we meet up I feel it can only go better.”

Since Steven Gerrard’s international retirement, no obvious candidates for the anchorman role have emerged, with Jordan Henderson asked to play there against Norway in the friendly last week.

Wilshere’s passing ability and composure on the ball mean he has the ability to do it, although critics will wonder if his talents are not wasted in a primarily defensive role.
