Former manager David Moyes brought in the 26 year old in January, Man United paying Chelsea £37m for the playmaker, but now the former Valencia man will be allowed to leave for as little as £24m.

That price-tag is said to have interested his former Mestalla side as well as Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

Interest from the Serie A title holders may aid Louis van Gaal’s push to sign long term target Arturo Vidal and Juventus are said to be even more tempted to make such a move when the transfer window re-opens on the grounds that Mata will be eligible for European action.

Mata may struggle to force his way into Louis van Gaal’s starting eleven, which will presumably have to accommodate Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and newly signed pair Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

That said Mata has been an effective performer since moving to Man United racking up seven goals and four assists in 17 Premier League starts since his move from Stamford Bridge.
