The Dutch international was linked with a move to the Red Devils during the summer transfer window, but with Louis Van Gaal preoccupied with the unsuccessful attempts to lure Arturo Vidal to Old Trafford, an official bid failed to materialise.

The defensive minded enforcer was a huge part of Van Gaal’s march to the World Cup final with the Dutch national side this summer and the coach is keen on a reunion with his former charge.

The 29-year-ole, who previously enjoyed a successful spell with cross city neighbours Manchester City before linking up with the Italian giants, had also been tipped to rejoin former side Ajax over the summer, but he quickly dismissed those rumours as he hoped to continue playing at the highest level.

Italian media outlets had suggested that a move to United was on the cards in either January or at the end of the season, but it now appears that De Jong wants to remain at the San Siro under new boss Filippo Inzaghi.
