The Gunners missed out on Carvalho this summer, but remain keen on adding a young holding midfielder to their squad, capable of challenging captain Mikel Arteta for a starting spot.

Reports in the Metro suggest that despite rejecting a deadline day offer from the North London club on deadline day, new talks will take place between Arsenal’s representatives and Sporting’s president Bruno de Carvalho in England for the Soccerex convention.

It’s claimed that Arsenal will discuss a fee ahead of the January window, with Sporting are resigned to the player going, and desiring the framework of a transfer sorted in the coming days. Carvalho has a buyout clause set at £37m, but it’s expected that he’ll go for much less, with Lisbon desperate to raise funds.

According to the Daily Express, Liverpool and Manchester United are also keeping an eye on negotiations, but that Arsenal are in pole position to sign the player.
