According to the Daily Star, club captain Mikel Arteta and defender Per Mertesacker helped complete the deal ahead of their great North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Welbeck was keen to leave Old Trafford, but with time running out until the window shut only Spurs were in the running to sign the England international.

However, when Arteta and Mertesacker learnt of this fact they contacted manager Arsene Wenger to campaign for the Frenchman to enter the race.

Wenger was in Rome at the time, but listened to the plea of his senior players and as a result pushed forward with the signing of Welbeck – which was completed with very little time to spare.

The skipper and vice-captain knew the 23-year-old would be open to a switch to the Emirates Stadium having met him at a Hertfordshire gym not too long before.

At the time Welbeck was there with the Three Lions and after a chat with Arteta and Mertesacker revealed that he wanted to leave United and the Emirates would be a desirable destination.

The forward is in line to make his debut for his new team when they take on Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
