The defensive midfielder looks set to leave the Parc des Princes sometime in the next year with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Roma look to be frontrunners for his signature after manager Rudi Garcia confirmed last week that the club are interested in bringing the French youngster to the Italian capital, although he denied that there was an agreement in place to sign the 19-year-old in January.

However, Walter Sabatini, the club’s sporting director, has now confirmed that the Serie A side would like to bring Rabiot to Rome before he becomes available for free next summer.

“He is an exceptional player who has forged ahead. We like him very much,” Sabatini was quoted by Goal.

“He is a player that we would like and we will discuss him through correct behaviour, we will not wait for a solution to acquire him on a free transfer.

“If we have the privilege and the desire to negotiate for Rabiot, we will do so in agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.

“But I believe it will be difficult, as his contract situation is unknown. We will try to work on this as something between clubs of great prestige.”

Roma aren’t the only club who are interested in the PSG youngster with Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea known to be considering offers for the Frenchman.

Sabatini also stated how happy he was that Roma had kept hold of Kevin Strootman during the summer.

The Dutchman had been linked with Manchester United but Sabatini claims the club have no desire to see the midfielder leave.

“He [Strootman] is an extraordinary player, and these rumours [of his sale] have been based on the desires of other clubs,” he added.
