The Switzerland World Cup hero had been denied a move to Anfield over the summer by the German champions, after Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers looked set to make a £15m swoop for his services.

He gained notoriety in Brazil for his powerful and dangerous runs, which were capped off by an excellent hat trick against Honduras in the group stage.

And despite making ten new signings over the summer, Rodgers could be persuaded to make a return for the midfielder in the new year.

That’s after Shaqiri’s agent and brother, Erdin, claimed his sibling could quit Bayern if he is not satisfied with his involvement in Pep Guardiola’s side in the opening months of the season.

“In the summer there was no chance of leaving,” Erdin said.

“But in the winter, there’s a strong possibility, and we will look to see how many games Xherdan has played by then.”
