Owen is a big fan of Arsenal’s new number nine (who is actually their number 23).

Former Liverpool and Manchester United goal machine Michael Owen is confident that new £16m Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck will be a success at the Emirates Stadium.

Owen, working as a commentator for BT Sport, watched Welbeck make his Gunners debut in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

“I really do think he’s going to be a hit here,” Owen was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

“£16m is not the biggest transfer fee in the current climate but he’s got a good touch, height and strength.

“I think he’s perfect for this [number nine] role for Arsenal.”

Welbeck had a mixed game. He played for 88 minutes and attempted five shots – more than any other player on the pitch.

He was off target with three of his five shots – one of which hit the post.

The England international had 42 touches in total and found a teammate with 83 per cent of his 24 passes.

It was Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez who got the goals for Arsenal.

Argentina duo Sergio Aguero and Martin Demichelis scored for City.

Welbeck scored 20 goals in 102 Premier League games during his Man United career. However, only 53 of those 102 appearances came as starts and he was often used in a deeper position by his former club.
