Bernabeu side will fight Old Trafford outfit for Kevin Strootman.

Real Madrid are eyeing up a January move for AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Dutch international is currently out with a long term knee injury but is set to return in November and should the 24 year old continue to be fighting fit when the January transfer window reopens then AS Roma boss Rudi Garcia can expect a great deal of interest in the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Man United are known to be long term admirers of the box to box performer and one has to wonder quite where Strootman would fit into Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

The Bernabeu boss saw Xabi Alonso leave for Bayern Munich this summer but the Italian can still call upon stellar talents such as Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Sami Khedira and Illara to fill central midfield roles.

Louis van Gaal’s need in this regard is certainly far greater, even after the summer acquisitions of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.

Strootman would offer Man United some much needed steel as well as a real threat going forward and would be a huge improvement on the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Tom Cleverley.
