The Spanish giants are determined to bring in a new midfielder when the transfer window re-opens in the winter, with Vidal seemingly top of Carlo Ancelotti’s list as he ponders a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso.

Sami Khedira could also be set to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer, which has also seen Real linked with the likes of Manchester City star Yaya Toure and Chelsea midfielder Ramires.

Having offloaded the likes of Alonso, Angel Di Maria and Alvaro Morata this summer, Real have plenty of money to spend and are planning to build on the summer additions of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.

Vidal has long been linked with a number of bigger clubs, including Madrid, though United looked his most likely destination for much of the summer as the Red Devils repeatedly tried their luck with bids in the region of £40m, including the offer of players in exchange.

However, an agreement between themselves and Juventus was never reached, and Real now look set to put a straightforward £48m bid on the table for the in-demand Chilean international to come in and improve on their current options in the middle of the park.

This will come as another major blow for United in the transfer market, though recent reports suggest they are now focusing their efforts on AS Roma pair Kevin Strootman and Miralem Pjanic.
