Atletico keep tabs on United playmaker.Atletico Madrid are reportedly plotting a move to sign Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata this January, according to Spanish source Fichajes.net.
The Spanish international has not been at his best at Old Trafford since he made the surprise move to United from Chelsea last winter, and recent speculation suggests he may not be part of new manager Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans.
The Dutchman was ruthless in offloading the likes of Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Nani this summer, and Mata could be the next in the firing line when the transfer window re-opens in the middle of the season.
Juventus have been linked with a bid for Mata as well, but it may be that the former Chelsea man will favour a return to La Liga, where he first made a name for himself at Valencia.
Atletico look like a team on the up despite seeing their title-winning squad raided by Chelsea in the summer, with big names such as Mario Mandzukic, Antoine Griezmann and Alessio Cerci coming in during the recent transfer window.
Mata would make another excellent purchase by Diego Simeone as he looks to ensure his unfancied side can shock Spain again by retaining their title this season.
