Tottenham and Man City are also said to be keen on the Republic of Ireland international who was promised a new and improved deal some time ago.

The 23 year old enjoyed a strong debut season with the Toffees following his £13m move from Wigan Athletic but the promise of talks on a new deal have taken a fair while and that could leave McCarthy vulnerable to interest from ‘bigger’ clubs.

Louis van Gaal could certainly do with some added steel in the centre of his Man United side and though this issue has been, in part, covered by the signing of Dutch utility man Daley Blind arguably McCarthy offers more in that regard than the former Ajax man.

McCarthy first broke onto the scene when he made his debut for Scottish side Hamilton at the age of 15 and despite his tender years the tough tackler already has 286 club appearances to his name as well as 24 national team caps.
