For several months now the 29-year-old has been regularly linked with a return to former club United, with a potential switch being lined up for next summer, while rumours have also circled regarding a move to join ex-Madrid boss Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.

However, reports in the Daily Mail have revealed that the Portuguese forward’s incredible wage demands could put an end to any hopes either of the Premier League giants might have had of completing a deal.

The source states that Ronaldo will demand a ground-breaking £500,000-a-week to leave European Champions Real Madrid at the end of the season. With the news coming after the star confirmed that he was on the verge of re-joining United in the summer of 2013.

That deal was scuppered by the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and the fact that United were not prepared to pay Ronaldo what he wanted. Instead, Ronaldo eventually got a new deal with Madrid, which is worth in the region of £350,000-a-week. But now, he wants more.

The major issue is that United have since given Wayne Rooney a £300,000-a-week contract, while earlier this month signed Ramadal Falcao on a deal which will earn the Colombian £390,000-a-week, meaning that their wage budget has already been stretched.

Falcao’s deal was sealed by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who is also Ronaldo’s agent. However, Mendes’ friendship with Mourinho means that both clubs believed they had a realistic chance of signing the player come 2015. But only time will tell as to whether either will agree to meet such demands.
