The Red Devil’s manager Louis van Gaal says he is targeting a top three finish, but newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney has loftier ambitions according to TheHardTackle.

Rooney believes that the signing of Colombian hit man Radamel Falcao will “get us back to where we belong – back winning titles again”.

“He’s a world-class player,” the England captain said. “It’s down to Louis van Gaal how he chooses to play. He’s got myself, Falcao, Van Persie, di María, Mata… So it’s a great selection of players for him to pick from. It’s a great statement of intent from the club and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Falcao was a surprise deadline day signing for the Manchester club, getting the former Porto and Athletico Madrid man on loan from Monaco for the remainder of the season. The loan fee was believed to be somewhere in the region of £5m, with an option to make the deal permanent for a further £43m.

“I’ve seen him play throughout the years and he’s a fantastic player,” continued Rooney. “It’s exciting, and also for the Premier League as well, for him to come over. He could have gone to a number of other clubs but it’s great he’s come over and we’ve got him.”

There have been noticeable gaps in United’s squad since Sir Alex Ferguson left, and although it was not entirely his fault, it cannot be denied that David Moyes failed to address these gaps by bringing in the right players. Rooney claimed that the club had always had the ability to spend big in the market, but had only recently started to do so.

“We always could do but it was a case of who the manager at the time wanted to bring in. Obviously last season, we know we were not good enough.”

“It’s exciting times, it’s interesting times for United. We’ve not got off to the best start but we are confident,” he concluded.

It has been suggested that Louis van Gaal has not finished in the transfer market yet, and will be looking to bring another centre back into the squad in January. Dortmund’s Matts Hummels has been touted, and it is believed van Gaal is willing to offload Juan Mata to make room for the German international.
