They may not get all the glory but these guys are arguably the most important players in their sides.

Here are the top 5 unsung players of the season.

5. Eric Dier

Dier was one of Spurs summer signings and he has looked right at home in the Premier League. The 20 year old’s first four appearances this season have been exceptional. He has calmly slotted into the right back position and made it his own. While the likes of Eric Lamela have got the headlines for an impressive start to the season, Dier has been just as effective but hasn’t got the same praise.

4. Laurent Koscielny

After having a suspect start to his Arsenal career, Koscielny has blossomed into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League. This season, he has calmly and quietly gone about his business and done a good job of protecting the Gunners defence. The Frenchman is more than happy to be quietly effective while the likes of Alexis Sanchez take all the headlines.

3. Fernando

The Brazilian is another newcomer to the Premier League who has been quietly brilliant for his new team. Fernando does all of the dirty work in front of his defence and lets City’s more creative players focus on being an attacking threat. Although he hasn’t got a lot of plaudits, £12 million for Fernando looks like an absolute bargain at the moment.

2. Joe Allen

The Welshman is arguably one of the best passers in the Premier League and has gone about his job quietly but effectively this season. The diminutive figure is able to start passing moves from central midfield and is also able to stop opposition attacks. Although the likes of Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge are regarded as the top players at Liverpool, they wouldn’t be as effective if Allen wasn’t starting attacks for them.

1. Nemanja Matic

So far this season, new signings Diego Costa an Cesc Fabregas have got all the headlines for Chelsea’s breathtaking start to the campaign. However, some of the plaudits should go to Matic because if he wasn’t doing his job so well, Fabregas and Costa wouldn’t be able to shine like they are at the moment. The Serb is hard working and acts as a shield in front of the Blues defence. He is exactly what Jose Mourinho’s midfield needs and he should be applauded for his quiet but highly effective form so far this season.
