The Ivorian international joined the Serie A giants last summer in a deal worth £8m after failing to make the grade in north London, and his original deal had been due to expire in 2017.

Gervinho scored nine times in 33 league appearances in his maiden campaign in Italy’s top flight to help the Giallorossi finish runners-up to Juventus.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Roma announces it has extended the contract of Yao Gervais Kouassi “Gervinho” for a further sporting season.

“The new contract will expire on June 30, 2018.”

Gervinho was in fine form over the summer, too, playing in all three of the Ivory Coast’s group games, scoring two goals in the process.

He has also got off the mark this season, netting in the club’s 2-0 season opener against Fiorentina last month.
