The Italian tactician is keen to enhance his midfield options after losing Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich in the summer, and with Sami Khedira possibly heading for the exit door on a free transfer next year.

Real also look a little suspect defensively at the moment, and could do with a tough-tackling defensive shield to come in in front of their back four, with Matuidi having shown himself to be a top player in that position for PSG.

Arsenal were linked weith the experienced French international back in January, and have also watched him in his Saint-Etienne days, though a move for him to join Arsene Wenger’s squad has never materialised so far.

The Bernabeu may now be his next destination if Real step up their interest in signing him this winter, though the club have also been linked with a number of other options in that position.

It seems unlikely that PSG would let such a key player go for cheap, but Real have a good track record of landing their top targets, whatever the price.
