The Denver Broncos travel to CenturyLink Field on Sunday to lock horns with the Seattle Seahawks for the first time in a competitive game since their Super Bowl defeat.
Seven months on from that heavy loss at the MetLife Stadium in Super Bowl XLVIII, Peyton Manning and his Broncos will attempt to get the better of their rivals from Seattle, although this time, they will also have to contend with the ’12th man’.
The Seahawks secured a 43-8 rout back on February 2, the most one-sided Super Bowl in over 20 years, with quarterback Russell Wilson throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns while Richard Sherman and the ‘Legion of Boom’ shut down the Broncos offense.
However, despite opening the new season with an impressive win over the Green Bay Packers, the Seahawks came unstuck in Week 2 as they slipped to a defeat to the San Diego Chargers.
Wilson threw for 202 yards and two scores, but opposite number Philip Rivers stole the show to ensure that Seattle fall to 1-1 for the season. Coach Pete Carroll issued a warning though, stating that his players don’t take defeat easily and will be looking to bounce back immediately.
In contrast, the Broncos are 2-0 despite some close games against the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs respectively, and Manning will also be boosted by the return of receiver Wes Welker this weekend.
Tight end Julius Thomas has been the star performer in his absence with 143 yards receiving and four touchdowns, but against a Seattle defense that has held teams to an average of 13.3 points per game in an 18-1 run for Wilson as a starter, they will likely find things a little tougher.
Denver last visited Seattle back in 2002, securing a 31-9 victory, but much has changed since then and the hosts will be looking to get back to winning ways after a shock setback last time out.
