The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the former PSV Eindhoven enforcer, who was a key part of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands side before injury ruled him out of this summer’s World Cup.

The same injury has kept Strootman from playing so far this season but it is expected that he will be back for the Italian club before the new year.

Recent reports have suggested that Roma would be willing to sell the 24 year old if they receive a bid of £60 million however, sporting director Walter Sabatini has followed club chief Mauro Baldissoni in insisting that the Dutch star will not be leaving the Italian capital in January.

“We can’t wait to see Strootman back on the field, because we really miss him and that moment is getting closer,” the Giallorossi’s general director told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are proud to have Strootman in our squad and he is not for sale.”

While Roma have started the season well, winning all three of their Serie A fixtures, Manchester United have struggled, picking up just five points from their first five games Premier League games.
