The 36-year-old spent the vast majority of his career at Stamford Bridge and is regarded as one of their best ever players, but left the club at the end of his contract this summer, agreeing a deal with MLS side New York City FC.

However, he then made the surprise loan move to Premier League champions Man City, where he will spend the first half of the season as he looks to keep match fit in time for the start of the new season in the US.

Still, Lampard’s decision to move to City was seen as highly controversial, and in an incredible twist, he scored his first goal for the club in yesterday’s draw at home to Chelsea, coming on as a substitute to net a late equaliser.

The England international’s strike held his old team to a draw in this crucial clash, and he has now admitted he didn’t know what result he wanted from the day before it began.

“It’s a really difficult one. I’d be unprofessional if I came on and didn’t do my job so I’m mixed with it,” he explained.

“I’m obviously pleased that the side I came on for got a draw.

“The Chelsea fans were singing my name and it was an emotional day.

“It’s not how I expected to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans. I woke up this morning and didn’t know what I wanted from today so I’m glad it’s out of the way. I guess this a happy medium.”
