Gullit initially backed his fellow Dutchman to be a shining success in the Premier League, but compounded by their 5-3 loss against Leicester over the weekend, the 52-year-old has criticised the way van Gaal went about his transfer business this window.

“I think it’s crazy,” Gullit said.

“When you build a house you start with the foundation.”

“But Van Gaal has started with the roof.”

“So then they crumble. I really do not get it.”

“I really don’t understand why he did not start with the defence.”

“And now he really needs to address it,” he concluded.

With the transfer window now closed it’s a little late to shore up their leaky defence, van Gaal will therefore have to make do with the defenders he’s got…

But with the club already suffering somewhat of an injury crisis with their centre-backs, and having to rely on youngsters like Tyler Blackett, United may continue to suffer and be too far behind in the league by Christmas to mount any kind of challenge.

The Red Devils will surely move for defensive enforcements in January, but until then, they’ll have to make do with the meek resources currently at their disposal.
