Gunners boss Arsene Wenger praised the midfielder’s mental strength to continue his fightback despite suffering an astonishing 40 injuries during his eight-year stint at the club.

Diaby feared his career could be over after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury 18 months ago and has managed just one substitute appearance since then after a string of setbacks.

But Wenger has claimed that the 28-year-old will be in line for a return of Tuesday night, saying that he deserves a change in fortune.

“Diaby played 90 minutes at Villa Park for the Under-21s last week,” he said.

“He was with us at Villa Park again on Saturday and he will play against Southampton.

“He’s a giant mentally. To do what he has done, with the severe injuries he had, he comes back every time, is dedicated and he deserves a lot of respect.

“I’m a huge believer in his quality and I’m sad as well that he couldn’t show it more. If there is some justice, the future will be much better for him.”
