The 19-year-old is currently just one of four fit defenders available for this weekend’s clash with West Ham as the club’s injury problems at the back reached crisis point and he could be in line to play despite a rumour claiming that he does not rate him.

Rookie Tyler Blackett will be suspended after seeing red at Leicester on Saturday and Jonny Evans is set for a spell on the sidelines after limping off injured during United’s 5-3 humiliation.

England star Phil Jones is also out, meaning Van Gaal is left with just Rafael, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Shaw as the managers only options.

Shaw is still waiting to make his first appearance for the Red Devils following his expensive summer switch from Southampton after Van Gaal criticised Shaw’s fitness during pre-season and put him on a special training programme to get him up to speed.

The England international then suffered an ill-timed hamstring problem which ruled him out for the first month of the campaign.
