Liverpool progress to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup…
Liverpool got the better of Championship side Middlesbrough in the third round of the Capital One Cup, but were far from confident in their performance – winning 15-14 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Teenager Jason Rossiter scored the first goal of the night, slotting home confidently from the edge of the area, despite the best efforts from Boro’ goalkeeper Jamal Blackman:

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was again disappointing in the Liverpool goal, and was caught out by another cross, with Adam Reach heading in the visitors equaliser:

In the second-half of extra-time, substitute Suso put the Reds back in front after a goalmouth scramble. His right footed shot found the net after Adam Lallana was blocked:

But with just seconds remaining, Raheem Sterling lost the ball in midfield, and Kolo Toure brought down Patrick Bamford in the penalty area. Bamford hauled himself back to his feet and slotted home the resulting penalty:

It was the first of 31 penalties on the night. Suso eventually scored what turned out to be the winner. Albert Adomah missed for the Boro:

It was another nervous night for Liverpool who, despite spending over £100m on new players this summer, still don’t appear to have the squad depth to compete on multiple fronts.
