The Reds beat Championship side Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalties, in an epic match-up on Tuesday night which finished 2-2 after extra-time. They now face 2013 winners and Brendan Rodgers’ former team Swansea, who defeated Everton 3-0 to progress.

Chelsea, who edged Bolton 2-1 on Wednesday, travel to the lowest ranked side still remaining in the competition. Shrewsbury beat Norwich City 1-0 the previous night.

Elsewhere, Manchester City host Newcastle United after thrashing Sheffield Wednesday 7-0. Newcastle came through a much more challenging tie, edging Crystal Palace 3-2 after extra time.

Stoke play Southampton in the only other match contested between two Premier League teams, while Tottenham host Brighton and West Brom travel to Bournemouth.

In the remaining match-ups, Championship rivals Derby and Fulham will do battle, while Manchester United’s conquerors MK Dons face League One rivals Sheffield United.
