Despite recruiting heavily over the Summer, United have still be left short at the back and manager Louis Van Gaal is once again expected to dip into the transfer market in the new year in an attempt to halt the slide.

There has been some suggestion that the Dutchman could use Michael Carrick as a makeshift centre-half after failing to adequately replace Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic over the summer.

United were linked with a move for Miranda this summer before the defender opted to stay with the Spanish champions.

He is believed to still be keen on a move to the Premier League, though, and Van Gaal could make his move for the player when the transfer window re-opens.

Atletico are thought to have set their asking price for the 30-year-old at £24m, and aren’t interested in dropping it.

However, they could be persuaded to let him go should United include Juan Mata as part of the deal.

Chelsea are also being tipped with a move for the Brazilian star with doubts arising over the readiness of Kurt Zouma, who arrived over the summer after spending the second half of last season back on loan with Saint Etienne.
