The Chilean tactician was full of praise for the 36-year-old midfielder after his two goals in the Capital One Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday, which followed on from his crucial strike against former club Chelsea last weekend.

Lampard still looks a player on the top of his game at Premier League level, and although Pellegrini admits he cannot necessarily play every few days at this age, he still has a lot to offer his squad this season.

The former England international is currently on loan at the Etihad Stadium from their MLS franchise side New York City FC, and his current deal with the Premier League champions is set to expire half way through the league season in England.

However, Pellegrini has now expressed an interest in keeping Lampard for longer, and said that he will have a decision to make in the next few months.

Speaking after last night’s game, a delighted Pellegrini spoke fondly of the veteran midfield star and when asked about extending his stay at City, he said: “It is an issue that we will see further down the line.  We will see what happens in January and we have two or three months to decide.

“He deserves all the praise he can get from the fans.

“We will do what is best for the team and the player. He is a very important player for our team and maybe, at 36, he cannot play three games in a row. But Frank is a top player.”
