Reports in the French press – referenced here by Goal.com – claim that both are hopeful of prising the player away from Old Trafford, with the forward’s recent uplift in form having convinced the pair to make a bid next summer.

The 31-year-old scored his first goal of the season during United’s 5-3 defeat at the hands of Leicester City on Sunday, but will be desperate to seal a return to European football as his career enters its twilight years.

His place in Louis van Gaal’s starting XI is also far from certain, with his countryman having named Wayne Rooney as club captain, and secured the signing of Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from AS Monaco.

The former Arsenal man, who joined United in the summer of 2012, has scored 49 goals for the Red Devils thus far, although 30 of those came during the 2012-13 title campaign.

His old injury issues are beginning to resurface, and United could well be tempted to sell if they receive a suitable bid of somewhere around the £20m mark.
