The Belgium international had been offered a new five-year deal by Spurs in June, but has now decided against putting pen to paper and adding a further year onto his contract.

Despite rejecting the new contract, Vertonghen insists he is happy at White Hart Lane and is excited by what Mauricio Pochettino is doing at the club.

“I am not signing, no,” the 27-year-old was quoted by Goal.

“We agreed not to. Why? I would prefer not to say. I still have four years left. I am happy at the club and I think they are happy with me. That’s where it ends.

“I am very happy. We have a good manager, we have a good team and a lot of good players. The squad is very big and you have to work hard to play every game, and I hope I am playing again soon.”

Tottenham signed defensive reinforcements during the summer with Fabio Fazio and Eric Dier being bought in. This has meant that Vertonghen has only played two Premier League games so far this season but the Belgian isn’t worried about the lack of first team football.

He continued: “I hope I play every game, in the weekends and midweek. I want to play in the biggest games – that is what you are a footballer for.

”We are fighting for two places with those guys. Everyone has to be just that little bit better so the manager chooses them.”

Barcelona were reportedly interested in signing the defender during the summer but decided instead on buying Jeremy Mathieu.
