The Blues boss has publicly ruled himself out of the running to sign the Portuguese international, who is being strongly linked with a big-money return to his old club Manchester United next summer, while Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping an eye on his situation at the Bernabeu.

However, club insiders have now revealed that Mourinho is quietly confident of persuading Ronaldo to link up with him again at Stamford Bridge, with the former Real Madrid boss keen to resolve his differences with the player after a sour end to their time together in the Spanish capital.

Mourinho did not enjoy great success in his final season with Real, but is thought to be unwilling to see the 29-year-old return to Manchester without putting up a fight.

Although Ronaldo would be an extremely expensive purchase, Chelsea are ready to offload some of their current first-team stars, whilst also being confident that they can sell off a number of their players currently out on loan for a decent price.

Club owner Roman Abramovich has not shyed away from expensive deals in the past, bringing in Fernando Torres from Liverpool for £50m back in 2011, in what was a British transfer record fee at the time.

Still, it remains to be seen if Mourinho will be successful in winning Ronaldo over, as he has made it clear that United still hold a special place in his heart after his tremendous success there earlier in his career.
