The Red Devils had been linked with a move for the Swiss international over the summer, but instead opted to splash out £31m on Southampton’s Luke Shaw.

Despite the move for Rodriguez falling through, German publication Kicker has claimedthat United will revive their interest in the player during the winter transfer window – with Louis van Gaal desperate to bolster his defensive options following a poor start to the season for his new club.

The 22-year-old still has two years remaining on his current deal with Wolfsburg, but as of yet the club have not sought to extend his stay and he could be tempted to join up with the Red Devils in the coming months.

He impressed for his country at the World cup this year, and was deemed to be one of the best defensive performers during the second round loss against Argentina.
