The Red Devils spent £150m on new signings this summer, bringing in big names such as Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao alongside other expensive transfer such as Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind.

However, reports today suggest that a deal to re-sign Ronaldo from Real Madrid could end up costing a total of £160m, taking into account his mammoth transfer fee and wage packet, with this price supposedly putting the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain off competing for his signature.

The Portuguese international is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, but looks financially out of reach even for some of Europe’s biggest clubs, suggesting United may be playing a dangerous game by pursuing him.

Additionally, it has been reported that AS Roma midfielder Strootman, a favourite of Louis van Gaal, would command a transfer fee of £60m – despite moving for just £15m from PSV last summer – while his wages could end up costing the club a further £25m if he signs a four-year contract as suggested.

This may be cause of some alarm for United fans, who have seen a drastic change of approach from their club in the transfer market after slipping out of the top four last season, but with results on the pitch still to show any improvement – and it has to be asked, how much can Ronaldo and Strootman, as good as they are, bring such a turnaround for the team?
