Indeed the Serie A side are also said to be in precarious financial position due to their early Champions League exit and the 26 year old Argentine may be sold in order to balance the books.

The Naples side had placed an astronomical £80m price-tag on the former Real Madrid man but circumstances may dictate the asking price is greatly reduced with Blues boss Jose Mourinho, as well as Liverpool, said to be keen on the lethal finisher.

Mourinho knows Higuain well from their shared time at the Bernabeu and may feel that the Serie A star would act as a perfect foil for Brazilian born Spanish international Diego Costa.

Given that Didier Drogba is very much a short-term option and perhaps Loic Remy being seen more as a back-up a move for Higuain would be a wise one to consider.

Higuain has proven a big success since moving to Italy, netting 27 goals in 55 appearances, but could be tempted by a move to the Premier League.
