Sources in Spain claim that the Champions League winners are dead set on bringing in the Dutchman this January, with Radamel Falcao’s arrival at Old Trafford this summer pushing him down in the pecking order and leading him to consider his future.

United may also be open to letting him go for the right amount due to concerns over his fitness, with some signs of the injury problems that plagued him earlier in his career coming back.

The Red Devils are also ready to offload other big names this January in a bid to raise around £91m in transfer funds to pursue big-money deals for the likes of AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, with midfield and defence still a priority for Louis van Gaal in the transfer market.

Although Benzema has been a terrific player at the Bernabeu, the Frenchman seems intent on trying a new challenge elsewhere, and has become Liverpool’s top target to help fill the void left by Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona in the summer.

The former Lyon man could bring in a £40m transfer fee, while van Persie may be allowed to move for as little as £20m, making it good business by Real, though they may face increased backlash from their supporters after also allowing key figures such as Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso to leave the club this summer.
