The 30-year-old has been linked with United on a number of occasions in the past, and it is thought that Louis van Gaal could also be keen to make a move for his fellow countryman, who played under him for the Dutch national team.

United are also being linked with other big-name midfield signings ahead of the January transfer window, with further strengthening in that area clearly a priority for the Red Devils.

The club spent big on the likes of Ander Herrera and Daley Blind this summer, but could still do with improvements in thet department after loaning Tom Cleverley to Aston Villa, and with Marouane Fellaini failing to impress and break into the team this season.

Sneijder is thought to be considering a move away from Galatasaray after nearly two years with the Turkish giants, and it is reported that he may not renew his current deal with the club, making him available for transfer in the winter market.

Galatasaray also lost a big player in Didier Drogba this summer, as the Ivory Coast veteran re-joined Chelsea.
