Mauricio Pochettino has seen his current striking options struggle for form this term and is known to retain an interst in his former Saints charge and Perry believes a move for the England man is entirely plausible.

“[Emmanuel Adebayor] doesn’t look particularly mobile and he struggles to play as a lone frontman and unfortunately that’s the way Mauricio Pochettino likes to play. I don’t think he has got the desire to close centre-backs down and run the channels.

“They need someone more mobile and I know they were linked with Jay Rodriguez in the summer and it will be interesting, if he gets fit at Southampton, whether they go back in for him. I know Pochettino likes him as a player.

“I think Harry Kane has done well in little cameo appearances but I don’t think he’s quite ready to start and lead the line just yet.”

Indeed the likes of Adebayor, Roberto Soldado, Harry Kane and Erik Lamela have scored just one Premier League goal between them and the former Burnley man may be an ideal target for the north London club.

The 25 year old is still out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury but could perhaps be a player the south-coast side would listen to offers for given how well Ronald Koeman’s side have done this term, with new signing Graziano Pelle scoring regularly since his move from Eredivisie side Feyenoord.
