The Gunners have been close to signing the 24-year-old several times, most recently in the summer transfer window.

They now look set to get their man as Louis van Gaal continues to re-shape his squad and get rid of players he doesn’t rate.

The Dutchman is happy to let Smalling move on and could replace him in the United squad with Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna, who has been linked with a £12 million move to Old Trafford in recent days.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will happy to get a player he has chased for many years and will also be relieved to add another defender to his squad.

The North London club have been short of defensive bodies in recent years and Smalling’s versatility will be put to good use during the long winter months of the season.

While the former Fulham man is happiest at centre back, he can also play at right back and as a defensive midfielder if needed.
