The BBC reports on the Old Trafford star’s comments relating to his actions that saw Louis van Gaal’s side down to ten men for the final half an hour of their clash on Saturday.

Referee Lee Mason ordered off Rooney for kicking Stewart Downing, leaving Man United scrambling for 30 minutes to secure a much needed win.

“It was probably the right decision,”

“I saw the West Ham player making a counter-attack and I tried to break-up the play, but I just misjudged it,” Rooney said.

“I am just grateful that the lads were able to hold on.”
