The Premier League side have a long standing interest in Chilean Arturo Vidal and though van Gaal is said to be concerned about the playmaker’s knee injury issues a bid is nonetheless in the offing for the 27 year old.

Vidal has played a key role in helping the Turin side to three successive Serie A titles and by all accounts Man United are in the clear in their pursuit of the South American.

However Man United will have to battle Arsenal for defender Angelo Ogbonna, the Italian international centre-back seemingly a player who interests both van Gaal and Arsene Wenger.

Van Gaal will hope that a combined £52m bid will be accepted by the Italian giants and should the Turin based side once again fail to crack the Champions League then a move in January would perhaps become all the more likely.

Man United spent upwards of £150m on new signings over the summer but the club’s indifferent start to the Premier League campaign may well lead to further funds being used to improve van Gaal’s squad as they pursue a crucial Champions League berth for next term.
