Having signed from Everton for £10m three years ago, his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Arteta was made club captain this season after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen, and it seems Arsene Wenger is keen to hold onto him for a little longer.

Arteta will have turned 33 by the end of the current season, so as is Wenger’s usual policy for players over 30 he will be offered no more than a one year extension.

The former Toffee is currently out with a calf injury he sustained against Tottenham on the weekend during the side’s 1-1 North London derby draw; though that is seemingly not likely to affect contract negotiations.

Arsenal fans may not view this as the best news, as many are of the mind that the Spaniard is past his best and should be moved on. He has put in a number of below par performances this season, and with the midfielder’s legs starting to go he looks unable to keep up with the pace of the game at times.

Fans will fear this extension means that the Gunners are less likely to bring in the true defensive midfielder they desperately need.
