The Gunners supporters might not be impressed with this piece of business…

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta has signed a one-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Emirates Stadium until at least 2016, as the Gunners move to tie down their star players.

Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky have all put pen to paper on new deals this year, but this latest move comes as something of a surprise, with the Arsenal captain struggling with form and fitness.

Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest that the North London side will announce the deal during the international break, which starts next Monday, while they add that Theo Walcott is likely to be the next in line for an extension.

Midfielder Arteta, 32, whose current deal expires at the end of this season, has been a relative success at the Emirates since a £10m move from Everton in 2011, and the experienced Spaniard was subsequently rewarded with the captaincy this summer.
