Reports in the Guardian carried quotes from the Borussia Dortmund centre-back, who rubbished claims linking him with a move to England: claiming that he has never been tempted to leave his current side.

The Daily Mirror has since revealed that United will instead turn their attentions to Hummels’ defensive partner Nevan Subotic, while the source also names Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar – who impressed under the United boss at the World Cup – as another potential target.

The 25-year-old Serbian international, who was capped at youth level by the USA, arrived at Dortmund from Mainz in 2008, and has since made 162 league appearances, scoring 13 goals. However, he was restricted to just 10 games last year due to injury.

United are currently struggling with injuries to their own defenders, and were without Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for Saturday’s 2-1 win against West Ham United, while youngster Tyler Blackett was also missing due to suspension.
