Former Gunner believes United have made a mistake in swapping Welbeck for Colombian ace.

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes that the club’s £16m hat trick hero Danny Welbeck will outscore his replacement at Manchester United, Radamel Falcao, the Daily Express reports.

The 23-year-old linked up with the north London outfit on transfer deadline day after being deemed surplus to requirements following the acquisition on the Monaco ace on a season long loan.

Falcao, who is yet to get off the mark for his new side, is being left behind by the England international after he netted a hat-trick against Galatasaray in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash.

And Merson, who scored 32 times for Arsenal during his 12-year stint, believes Welbeck will continue to prove van Gaal wrong.

“[Welbeck will] score more goals than Falcao, in my opinion,” Merson said. “I was shocked that he was allowed to go. A young English player – very shocked.”
