Welbeck hits out after stunning Champions League hat-trick.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has slammed his former club Manchester United for not giving him the opportunity to shine at Old Trafford, report the Express, after the England international scored an exhilarating Champions League hat-trick in his side’s midweek hammering of Galatasaray at the Emirates Stadium.

Welbeck came through the youth system at Manchester United and burst onto the scene as an exciting young player, but became more of a peripheral figure over the years at Old Trafford as successive managers shifted him out into wider and deeper position, ostensibly due to Welbeck’s lack of finishing ability.

New United manager Louis van Gaal opted to sell Welbeck to Arsenal for £16m on transfer deadline day this summer, bringing in Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco as a replacement, and the Dutchman hit out at Welbeck’s goals record following his departure to North London.

Welbeck himself, however, has started life as an Arsenal player in fine form, scoring his first Premier League goal in a comfortable Premier League victory at Old Trafford but scoring a sublime hat-trick against the Turkish side midweek.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixtures, Welbeck hit out at the way he was used at Old Trafford:

“Nobody can really criticise my finishing because they don’t really see me playing in a forward position too often. Obviously people can say I’ve not scored enough goals, but you stick the best strikers on the wing in a four-man midfield and see if they score goals.”
