John Terry has revealed that he was in tears when Chelsea’s challenge for the Premier League title collapsed last season.

In the wake of their 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham in March, Chelsea were seven points clear and looked certain to cruise to their first title since 2010.

But sloppy performances led to dropped points against relegation candidates like Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Norwich.

Manchester City and Liverpool were able to take advantage of the Blues’ wastefulness, and the West London club eventually finished third, despite their excellent record against the other title contenders.

Terry has admitted that the late collapse left him distraught: “I was in tears over the Premier League last year, over throwing that away and not winning it, that’s what I play for week in, week out. I’m never scared to show my emotions.”

The Chelsea captain is confident that the signings Chelsea have made over the summer will ensure that his eyes remain dry come May 2015: “those three signings are quality, all unbelievable players but big characters as well, on and off the pitch.”
