It was a quiet night for the Italian, whose most memorable moment came after the full-time whistle, when he controversially chose to ignore the orders of manager Brendan Rodgers, who asked him to applaud the travelling Liverpool fans.

Marco Streller scored the winner after another poor defensive display from the Anfield club, but the Daily Mail were focused on Balotelli, who headed directly down the tunnel after the full-time whistle.

Rodgers gestured to Balotelli, who had a late effort rightly ruled out for offside, to go over to the supporters, but the striker ignored the request. Balotelli failed to register a touch in the opposition’s box all evening, and cut a frustrated figure throughout the second-half.

The source adds that Liverpool could ill-afford to lose to Basle — the rivals they will probably need to finish ahead of if they are to avoid going out at the group stage. For next up are home and away clashes against European champions Real Madrid.
