Gerrard is quoted by the Daily Mail, who reported the skipper’s overwhelming dissatisfaction, with Marco Streller’s close-range strike was the difference between the two teams.

“I think we created a good few opportunities, but we didn’t deserve anything from this game today,” Gerrard told reporters after the game. “We were soft all over the pitch. They wanted it more than us. We were second best against an OK team and we made it easy for them.

“We came for the win, I expected us to win so it’s very disappointing. We’ll discuss it like we always do. We showed signs of getting back to form against Everton but tonight we went back to where we’ve been for most of the season which isn’t good enough.”

The Reds next two European games are against defending champions Real Madrid, who top Group B with six points from two games after beating Ludogorets 2-1. Liverpool drop to third with three points, behind Basel based on the head to head result.
