United had been looking to make their own move for the 25-year-old last summer only to be trumped to his signature by Spanish giants Real Madrid instead, who snapped him up in a world record £85m deal.

However, United now look to be thwarted in their attempts to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club and are thought to be turning their attentions to back to the Wales international.

Bale played a key role in last season’s Champions League victory, but has struggled to hit the same level of form this time around as Real have stuttered to get out of the blocks in the early stages of the campaign.

Sources in Spain claim Bale has not settled into the Madrid side – featuring new Galacticos Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez – this season.

The former Spurs ace has apparently been neglecting his defensive duties, which has concerned coach Carlo Ancelotti and frustrated his teammates, who have had to cover for him.

Ancelotti believes that he can get Bale back to his best, but United are waiting in the wings with the intention of making a move.
