The Portuguese left-back has made just three appearances for Madrid this season, and Louis van Gaal is hoping the chance of more first-team football will help lure him to Old Trafford.

Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti is apparently on the hunt for a new full-back, and with Marcelo the current first choice, it would appear that Coentrao will be the one to make way.

Dutchman Louis van Gaal is hoping that having Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao already at the club will help him to recruit the Real Madrid man. All three players share the same manager, and as a result van Gaal hopes Coentrao will be pushed towards a move England.

The Manchester United manager brought Marcos Rojo to the club over the summer, despite Luke Shaw also being recruited from Southampton for a massive £30m. With Coentrao added to the mix that would give him three left sided defenders, and one of them will surely suffer for it.

It has been reported in the past that van Gaal is not a fan of Shaw, and that he chastised the youngster for his lack of fitness ahead of the start to the new season.

Rojo seems to be the preferred choice ahead of the teenager at the moment, so if Coentrao is picked up in January it could spell trouble for the newly capped England international.
